Growing Past the Traditional Model of Academic Research
Throughout the 20th century, the academic research model was largely structured around a linear process: researchers identified questions, gathered data, formatted findings into academic papers, and disseminated their insights through peer-reviewed journals and conferences. This system created rigorous, high-quality research, but it also imposed significant constraints. Research findings were often locked behind paywalls, updates were slow to emerge, and collaboration was primarily limited to academic circles. The result was a system where knowledge transfer to industry was incremental at best, and the broader impact of research was often diluted by the lag between discovery and application.
Innovations from the Computer Science Industry
The computer science industry has demonstrated an alternative model for knowledge creation and dissemination. Through the open-source movement, organizations like the Joint Development Foundation (JDF) and platforms such as GitHub have revolutionized how intellectual property and technical advancements are shared. Rather than a rigid, paper-centric approach, open-source projects are developed iteratively, with many contributors refining, testing, and deploying improvements in real time. Work products are released in structured versions, ensuring that each iteration is a tangible, usable asset rather than a static document. This approach fosters rapid innovation, broad participation, and immediate applicability, principles that have driven the exponential growth of technological advancements in software and data science.
The CfOC’s Approach: Data & Software over Papers & Journals
The Center for Offsite Construction (CfOC) embraces this model as a guiding philosophy. Rather than prioritizing the traditional academic practice of writing papers as the primary output, our goal is to generate tangible work products—open-source standards, software tools, and structured datasets—that can drive meaningful change in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. These outputs will be shared through transparent, collaborative frameworks, enabling practitioners to directly engage with and refine our work.
This approach ensures that important research does not stagnate in theoretical discussions but translates into practical solutions for designers and builders. Open-source standards (accessible through ANSI, ICC, or JDF channels) will help establish a shared foundation for modular construction, ensuring interoperability and scalability. CfOC Software tools will support automation and decision-making in project design and execution. CfOC Data repositories will enable stakeholders to access structured information for better-informed decision-making and policy development.
Challenges & Commitment to Growth
We recognize that executing this vision requires a shift in both mindset and infrastructure. As CfOC builds capacity in terms of staff and funding, there may be instances where we fall short of fully realizing this model. However, we are committed to iterating towards this goal every day, improving our processes, and fostering a culture of transparency and collaboration.
Unlike the rapid adoption seen in the software industry, the AEC sector faces unique challenges. As a result, the transition toward an open-source, work-product-driven research model will necessarily be slower. We believe that by steadily demonstrating the benefits of this approach, we can drive meaningful adoption over time.

For this vision to succeed, we seek engagement from practitioners who are already versed in modern collaborative tools such as GitHub, AirTable, and XML-based data sharing. We invite those with experience in structured data management, digital automation, and open-source methodologies to contribute to our efforts.
